The History

The beginning of the Verde Canyon Railroad tracks back to 1895 in Jerome, AZ, a mining town set on a steep mountainside about 2000 feet above the valley. The trains helped residents and visitors traverse the difficult landscape and help build the Verde Valley communities. While the mines are now closed, the railroad lives on.
The first excursion train of the Verde Canyon Railroad was in November 1990. Beginning at Clarkdale Depot, there was no freight or mining ore on this train–only people looking for a relaxing yet exciting way to view the gorgeous landscape. The railway now boasts servicing an average of 100,000 people per year.

Early birds have morning train rides that provide spacious seating near panoramic windows. The Verde Canyon Railroad food features on-train appetizers complete with meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, brownie bites, and a champagne toast. Mimosas are available for an additional charge. In addition, there are breakfast choices and a full-service cash bar. The seating cars also connect to open-air viewing platforms.
A caboose option is available for exclusive parties of six or fewer adults. Cozy oversized chairs, large picture windows, cupola seating for two, and private outdoor platforms are part of this package. There is even a personal valet for your champagne and fresh appetizers.
If morning is not your thing, explore other options that provide similar luxuries such as cozy seating, panoramic views, and delicious snacks and beverages. Private seating is not always guaranteed, and separate parties may be seated near each other.

The Grape Train Escape
In addition to daily rides, there are a few special events on the Verde Canyon Railroad. The Grape Train Escape on Saturday night offers riders 21 years old and older a chance to sip wine and nibble on fresh snacks during a starlight train ride. It’s a quiet, relaxing, and even romantic way to spend the evening. Accommodations are first class, and guests receive luxury and attention right at their seats. You can also retreat to adjoining open-air cars to get even closer to the gorgeous views along the way.
Starlight Train Ride
Another Saturday night option is the Starlight Train Ride (separate from The Grape Train Escape). For guests 18 years old and older, the same amenities are available for this moonlight ride, including comfortable seating, snacks, and beverages.
Specialty Monthly Rides

The rail line offers specialty rides monthly (check their website for bookings and dates), such as the Liberty Wildlife Raptor at the Rails and Liberty Wildlife Reptiles at the Rails. These afternoon rides provide guests a learning opportunity to see some of the local wildlife along the way. Partnered with Arizona’s Liberty Wildlife, the railroad ensures you gaze upon owls, wild raptors, and more.

Fall
During the fall season, check out Ales on Rails, a beer fest to celebrate the changing season and toast the German tradition of Oktoberfest. Rides begin in September and go through October 31.
Christmas
Finally, don’t forget The Magical Christmas Journey™ to the North Pole. Starting at the Verde Canyon Railroad depot in Clarkdale, ring in the holiday season on a train ride complete with seasonal snacks and drinks, holiday lights, and festive decorations.
